Nehemiah 8

8:1 (#8-#2) maka serentak berkumpullah seluruh rakyat di halaman di depan pintu gerbang Air. Mereka meminta kepada Ezra, ahli kitab itu, supaya ia membawa kitab Taurat Musa, yakni kitab hukum yang diberikan TUHAN kepada Israel. 8:2 (#8-#3) Lalu pada hari pertama bulan yang ketujuh itu imam Ezra membawa kitab Taurat itu ke hadapan jemaah, yakni baik laki-laki maupun perempuan dan setiap orang yang dapat mendengar dan mengerti. 8:3 (#8-#4) Ia membacakan beberapa bagian dari pada kitab itu di halaman di depan pintu gerbang Air dari pagi sampai tengah hari di hadapan laki-laki dan perempuan dan semua orang yang dapat mengerti. Dengan penuh perhatian seluruh umat mendengarkan pembacaan kitab Taurat itu. 8:4 (#8-#5) Ezra, ahli kitab itu, berdiri di atas mimbar kayu yang dibuat untuk peristiwa itu. Di sisinya sebelah kanan berdiri Matica, Sema, Anaya, Uria, Hilkia dan Maaseya, sedang di sebelah kiri berdiri Pedaya, Misael, Malkia, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zakharia dan Mesulam. 8:5 (#8-#6) Ezra membuka kitab itu di depan mata seluruh umat, karena ia berdiri lebih tinggi dari semua orang itu. Pada waktu ia membuka kitab itu semua orang bangkit berdiri. 8:6 (#8-#7) Lalu Ezra memuji TUHAN, Allah yang maha besar, dan semua orang menyambut dengan: "Amin, amin!", sambil mengangkat tangan. Kemudian mereka berlutut dan sujud menyembah kepada TUHAN dengan muka sampai ke tanah. 8:7 (#8-#8) Juga Yesua, Bani, Serebya, Yamin, Akub, Sabetai, Hodia, Maaseya, Kelita, Azarya, Yozabad, Hanan, Pelaya, yang adalah orang-orang Lewi, mengajarkan Taurat itu kepada orang-orang itu, sementara orang-orang itu berdiri di tempatnya. 8:8 (#8-#9) Bagian-bagian dari pada kitab itu, yakni Taurat Allah, dibacakan dengan jelas, dengan diberi keterangan-keterangan, sehingga pembacaan dimengerti. 8:9 (#8-#10) Lalu Nehemia, yakni kepala daerah itu, dan imam Ezra, ahli kitab itu, dan orang-orang Lewi yang mengajar orang-orang itu, berkata kepada mereka semuanya: "Hari ini adalah kudus bagi TUHAN Allahmu. Jangan kamu berdukacita dan menangis!", karena semua orang itu menangis ketika mendengar kalimat-kalimat Taurat itu. 8:10 (#8-#11) Lalu berkatalah ia kepada mereka: "Pergilah kamu, makanlah sedap-sedapan dan minumlah minuman manis dan kirimlah sebagian kepada mereka yang tidak sedia apa-apa, karena hari ini adalah kudus bagi Tuhan kita! Jangan kamu bersusah hati, sebab sukacita karena TUHAN itulah perlindunganmu!" 8:11 (#8-#12) Juga orang-orang Lewi menyuruh semua orang itu supaya diam dengan kata-kata: "Tenanglah! Hari ini adalah kudus. Jangan kamu bersusah hati!" 8:12 (#8-#13) Maka pergilah semua orang itu untuk makan dan minum, untuk membagi-bagi makanan dan berpesta ria, karena mereka mengerti segala firman yang diberitahukan kepada mereka. 8:13 (#8-#14) Pada hari yang kedua kepala-kepala kaum keluarga seluruh bangsa, juga para imam dan orang-orang Lewi berkumpul pada Ezra, ahli hukum Taurat itu, untuk menelaah kalimat-kalimat Taurat itu. 8:14 (#8-#15) Maka didapatinya tertulis dalam hukum yang diberikan TUHAN dengan perantaraan Musa, bahwa orang Israel harus tinggal dalam pondok-pondok pada hari raya bulan yang ketujuh, 8:15 (#8-#16) dan bahwa di semua kota mereka dan di Yerusalem harus disampaikan berita dan pengumuman yang berbunyi: "Pergilah ke gunung, ambillah daun pohon zaitun, daun pohon minyak, daun pohon murad, daun pohon korma dan daun dari pohon-pohon yang rimbun guna membuat pondok-pondok sebagaimana tertulis." 8:16 (#8-#17) Maka pergilah orang mengambil daun-daun itu, lalu membuat pondok-pondok, masing-masing di atas atap rumahnya, di pekarangan mereka, juga di pelataran-pelataran rumah Allah, di lapangan pintu gerbang Air dan di lapangan pintu gerbang Efraim. 8:17 (#8-#18) Seluruh jemaah yang pulang dari pembuangan itu membuat pondok-pondok dan tinggal di situ. Memang sejak zaman Yosua bin Nun sampai hari itu orang Israel tidak pernah berbuat demikian. Maka diadakanlah pesta ria yang amat besar. 8:18 (#8-#19) Bagian-bagian kitab Taurat Allah itu dibacakan tiap hari, dari hari pertama sampai hari terakhir. Tujuh hari lamanya mereka merayakan hari raya itu dan pada hari yang kedelapan ada pertemuan raya sesuai dengan peraturan.

8:1 Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that [was] in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel.
8:2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who [could] hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month.
8:3 Then he read from it in the open square that [was] in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people [were attentive] to the Book of the Law.
8:4 So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, [and] Meshullam.
8:5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was [standing] above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up.
8:6 And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. Then all the people answered, "Amen, Amen!" while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with [their] faces to the ground.
8:7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people [stood] in their place.
8:8 So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped [them] to understand the reading.
8:9 And Nehemiah, who [was] the governor, Ezra the priest [and] scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day [is] holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn nor weep." For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law.
8:10 Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for [this] day [is] holy to our LORD. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
8:11 So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, "Be still, for the day [is] holy; do not be grieved."
8:12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that were declared to them.
8:13 Now on the second day the heads of the fathers' [houses] of all the people, with the priests and Levites, were gathered to Ezra the scribe, in order to understand the words of the Law.
8:14 And they found written in the Law, which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month,
8:15 and that they should announce and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, "Go out to the mountain, and bring olive branches, branches of oil trees, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of leafy trees, to make booths, as [it is] written."
8:16 Then the people went out and brought [them] and made themselves booths, each one on the roof of his house, or in their courtyards or the courts of the house of God, and in the open square of the Water Gate and in the open square of the Gate of Ephraim.
8:17 So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and sat under the booths; for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very great gladness.
8:18 Also day by day, from the first day until the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day [there was] a sacred assembly, according to the [prescribed] manner.
