Peperangan orang Israel melawan bani Benyamin 20:1 Lalu majulah semua orang Israel; dari Dan sampai Bersyeba dan juga dari tanah Gilead berkumpullah umat itu secara serentak menghadap TUHAN di Mizpa. 20:2 Maka berdirilah para pemuka dari seluruh bangsa itu, dari segala suku orang Israel, memimpin jemaah umat Allah yang jumlahnya empat ratus ribu orang berjalan kaki, yang bersenjatakan pedang. 20:3 Kedengaranlah kepada bani Benyamin, bahwa orang Israel telah maju ke Mizpa. Berkatalah orang Israel: "Ceritakan bagaimana kejahatan itu terjadi." 20:4 Lalu orang Lewi, suami perempuan yang terbunuh itu, menjawab: "Aku sampai dengan gundikku di Gibea kepunyaan suku Benyamin untuk bermalam di sana. 20:5 Lalu warga-warga kota Gibea itu mendatangi aku dan mengepung rumah itu pada malam hari untuk menyerang aku. Mereka bermaksud membunuh aku, tetapi gundikku diperkosa mereka, sehingga mati. 20:6 Maka kuambillah mayat gundikku, kupotong-potong dia dan kukirimkan ke seluruh daerah milik pusaka orang Israel, sebab orang-orang itu telah berbuat mesum dan berbuat noda di antara orang Israel. 20:7 Sekarang kamu sekalian, orang Israel, telah ada di sini. Berikanlah di sini pertimbanganmu dan nasihatmu." 20:8 Kemudian bangunlah seluruh bangsa itu dengan serentak, sambil berkata: "Seorangpun dari pada kita takkan pergi ke kemahnya, seorangpun dari pada kita takkan pulang ke rumahnya. 20:9 Inilah yang akan kita lakukan kepada Gibea; memeranginya, dengan membuang undi! 20:10 Kita akan memilih dari seluruh suku Israel sepuluh orang dari tiap-tiap seratus, seratus orang dari tiap-tiap seribu, seribu orang dari tiap-tiap sepuluh ribu, untuk mengambil bekal bagi laskar ini, supaya sesudah mereka datang, dilakukan kepada Gibea-Benyamin setimpal dengan segala perbuatan noda yang telah diperbuat mereka di antara orang Israel." 20:11 Demikianlah orang Israel berkumpul melawan kota itu, semuanya bersekutu dengan serentak. 20:12 Kemudian suku-suku Israel mengirim orang kepada seluruh suku Benyamin dengan pesan: "Apa macam kejahatan yang terjadi di antara kamu itu! 20:13 Maka sekarang, serahkanlah orang-orang itu, yakni orang-orang dursila yang di Gibea itu, supaya kami menghukum mati mereka dan dengan demikian menghapuskan yang jahat itu dari antara orang Israel." Tetapi bani Benyamin tidak mau mendengarkan perkataan saudara-saudaranya, orang Israel itu. 20:14 Sebaliknya, bani Benyamin dari kota-kota lain berkumpul di Gibea untuk maju berperang melawan orang Israel. 20:15 Pada hari itu dihitunglah jumlah bani Benyamin dari kota-kota lain itu: dua puluh enam ribu orang yang bersenjatakan pedang, belum termasuk penduduk Gibea, yang terhitung tujuh ratus orang pilihan banyaknya. 20:16 Dari segala laskar ini ada tujuh ratus orang pilihan yang kidal, dan setiap orang dari mereka dapat mengumban dengan tidak pernah meleset sampai sehelai rambutpun. 20:17 Juga orang-orang Israel dihitung jumlahnya; dengan tidak termasuk suku Benyamin ada empat ratus ribu orang yang bersenjatakan pedang; semuanya itu prajurit. 20:18 Lalu orang Israel berangkat dan maju ke Betel. Di sana mereka bertanya kepada Allah: "Siapakah dari kami yang lebih dahulu maju berperang melawan bani Benyamin?" Jawab TUHAN: "Suku Yehudalah lebih dahulu." 20:19 Lalu orang-orang Israel bangun pagi-pagi dan berkemah mengepung Gibea. 20:20 Kemudian majulah orang-orang Israel berperang melawan suku Benyamin; orang-orang Israel mengatur barisan perangnya melawan mereka dekat Gibea. 20:21 Juga bani Benyamin maju menyerang dari Gibea dan menggugurkan ke bumi dua puluh dua ribu orang dari antara orang Israel pada hari itu. 20:22 Tetapi laskar orang Israel mengumpulkan segenap kekuatannya, lalu mengatur pula barisan perangnya di tempat mereka mengatur barisannya semula. 20:23 Kemudian pergilah orang-orang Israel, lalu menangis di hadapan TUHAN sampai petang, sesudah itu mereka bertanya kepada TUHAN: "Akan pergi pulakah kami berperang melawan bani Benyamin, saudara kami itu?" Jawab TUHAN: "Majulah melawan mereka." 20:24 Tetapi ketika orang-orang Israel pada hari kedua sampai di dekat bani Benyamin, 20:25 maka pada hari kedua itu majulah suku Benyamin dari Gibea menyerbu mereka, dan digugurkannya pula ke bumi delapan belas ribu orang di antara orang-orang Israel; semuanya orang-orang yang bersenjatakan pedang. 20:26 Kemudian pergilah semua orang Israel, yakni seluruh bangsa itu, lalu sampai di Betel; di sana mereka tinggal menangis di hadapan TUHAN, berpuasa sampai senja pada hari itu dan mempersembahkan korban bakaran dan korban keselamatan di hadapan TUHAN. 20:27 Dan orang-orang Israel bertanya kepada TUHAN -- pada waktu itu ada di sana tabut perjanjian Allah, 20:28 dan Pinehas bin Eleazar bin Harun menjadi imam Allah pada waktu itu -- kata mereka: "Haruskah kami maju sekali lagi untuk berperang melawan bani Benyamin, saudara kami itu, atau haruskah kami hentikan itu?" Jawab TUHAN: "Majulah, sebab besok Aku akan menyerahkan mereka ke dalam tanganmu." 20:29 Lalu orang Israel menempatkan penghadang-penghadang sekeliling Gibea. 20:30 Pada hari ketiga majulah orang-orang Israel melawan bani Benyamin dan mengatur barisannya melawan Gibea seperti yang sudah-sudah. 20:31 Maka majulah bani Benyamin menyerbu laskar itu; mereka terpancing dari kota, dan seperti yang sudah-sudah, mereka mulai menyerang laskar itu pada kedua jalan raya -- yang satu menuju ke Betel, dan yang lain ke Gibea melalui padang -- sehingga terbunuh beberapa orang, kira-kira tiga puluh orang di antara orang Israel. 20:32 Maka kata bani Benyamin: "Orang-orang itu telah terpukul kalah oleh kita seperti semula." Tetapi orang-orang Israel telah bermupakat lebih dahulu: "Marilah kita lari dan memancing mereka dari kota ke jalan-jalan raya." 20:33 Jadi orang Israel bangun dari tempatnya dan mengatur barisannya di Baal-Tamar, sedang orang Israel yang menghadang itu tiba-tiba keluar dari tempatnya, yakni tempat terbuka dekat Geba, 20:34 dan sampai di depan Gibea, sebanyak sepuluh ribu orang pilihan dari seluruh Israel. Pertempuran itu dahsyat, tetapi bani Benyamin tidak tahu bahwa malapetaka datang menimpa mereka. 20:35 TUHAN membuat suku Benyamin terpukul kalah oleh orang Israel, dan pada hari itu orang-orang Israel memusnahkan dari antara suku Benyamin dua puluh lima ribu seratus orang, semuanya orang-orang yang bersenjatakan pedang. 20:36 Bani Benyamin melihat, bahwa mereka telah terpukul kalah. Sementara orang-orang Israel agak mundur di depan suku Benyamin -- sebab mereka mempercayai penghadang-penghadang yang ditempatkan mereka untuk menyerang Gibea -- 20:37 maka segeralah penghadang-penghadang itu menyerbu Gibea. Mereka bergerak maju dan memukul seluruh kota itu dengan mata pedang. 20:38 Tetapi orang-orang Israel telah bermupakat dengan penghadang-penghadang itu untuk menaikkan gumpalan asap tebal dari kota itu. 20:39 Ketika orang-orang Israel mundur dalam pertempuran itu, maka suku Benyamin mulai menyerang orang Israel, sehingga terbunuh kira-kira tiga puluh orang, karena pikir mereka: "Tentulah orang-orang itu terpukul kalah sama sekali oleh kita seperti dalam pertempuran yang dahulu." 20:40 Tetapi pada waktu itu mulailah gumpalan asap naik dari kota itu seperti tiang asap. Suku Benyamin menoleh ke belakang dan tampaklah kota itu seluruhnya terbakar, apinya naik ke langit. 20:41 Lagipula orang-orang Israel maju lagi. Maka gemetarlah orang-orang Benyamin itu, sebab mereka melihat, bahwa malapetaka datang menimpa mereka. 20:42 Jadi larilah mereka dari depan orang-orang Israel itu, ke arah padang gurun, tetapi pertempuran itu tidak dapat dihindari mereka, lalu orang-orang dari kota-kota menghabisi mereka di tengah-tengahnya. 20:43 Mereka mengepung suku Benyamin itu, mengejarnya dengan tak henti-hentinya dan melandanya sampai di depan Gibea, di sebelah timur. 20:44 Dari bani Benyamin ada tewas delapan belas ribu orang, semuanya orang-orang gagah perkasa. 20:45 Yang lain berpaling lari ke padang gurun, ke bukit batu Rimon. Tetapi di jalan-jalan raya masih diadakan penyabitan susulan di antara mereka: lima ribu orang; mereka diburu sampai ke Gideom dan dipukul mati dua ribu orang dari mereka. 20:46 Maka yang tewas dari suku Benyamin pada hari itu seluruhnya berjumlah dua puluh lima ribu orang yang bersenjatakan pedang, semuanya orang-orang gagah perkasa. 20:47 Tetapi enam ratus orang berpaling lari ke padang gurun, ke bukit batu Rimon, dan tinggal empat bulan lamanya di bukit batu itu. 20:48 Tetapi orang-orang Israel kembali kepada bani Benyamin dan memukul mereka dengan mata pedang, baik manusia baik hewan dan segala sesuatu yang terdapat di sana. Juga segala kota yang terdapat di sana mereka musnahkan dengan api.

20:1 So all the children of Israel came out, from Dan to Beersheba, as well as from the land of Gilead, and the congregation gathered together as one man before the LORD at Mizpah. 20:2 And the leaders of all the people, all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand foot soldiers who drew the sword. 20:3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the children of Israel said, "Tell [us], how did this wicked deed happen?" 20:4 So the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, "My concubine and I went into Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin, to spend the night. 20:5 "And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and surrounded the house at night because of me. They intended to kill me, but instead they ravished my concubine so that she died. 20:6 "So I took hold of my concubine, cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the territory of the inheritance of Israel, because they committed lewdness and outrage in Israel. 20:7 "Look! All of you [are] children of Israel; give your advice and counsel here and now!" 20:8 So all the people arose as one man, saying, "None [of us] will go to his tent, nor will any turn back to his house; 20:9 "but now this [is] the thing which we will do to Gibeah: [We will go up] against it by lot. 20:10 "We will take ten men out of [every] hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, a hundred out of [every] thousand, and a thousand out of [every] ten thousand, to make provisions for the people, that when they come to Gibeah in Benjamin, they may repay all the vileness that they have done in Israel." 20:11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, united together as one man. 20:12 Then the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, "What [is] this wickedness that has occurred among you? 20:13 "Now therefore, deliver up the men, the perverted men who [are] in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and remove the evil from Israel!" But the children of Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brethren, the children of Israel. 20:14 Instead, the children of Benjamin gathered together from their cities to Gibeah, to go to battle against the children of Israel. 20:15 And from their cities at that time the children of Benjamin numbered twentysix thousand men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who numbered seven hundred select men. 20:16 Among all this people [were] seven hundred select men [who were] lefthanded; every one could sling a stone at a hair's [breadth] and not miss. 20:17 Now besides Benjamin, the men of Israel numbered four hundred thousand men who drew the sword; all of these [were] men of war. 20:18 Then the children of Israel arose and went up to the house of God to inquire of God. They said, "Which of us shall go up first to battle against the children of Benjamin?" The LORD said, "Judah first!" 20:19 So the children of Israel rose in the morning and encamped against Gibeah. 20:20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel put themselves in battle array to fight against them at Gibeah. 20:21 Then the children of Benjamin came out of Gibeah, and on that day cut down to the ground twentytwo thousand men of the Israelites. 20:22 And the people, that is, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves and again formed the battle line at the place where they had put themselves in array on the first day. 20:23 Then the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, "Shall I again draw near for battle against the children of my brother Benjamin?" And the LORD said, "Go up against him." 20:24 So the children of Israel approached the children of Benjamin on the second day. 20:25 And Benjamin went out against them from Gibeah on the second day, and cut down to the ground eighteen thousand more of the children of Israel; all these drew the sword. 20:26 Then all the children of Israel, that is, all the people, went up and came to the house of God and wept. They sat there before the LORD and fasted that day until evening; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. 20:27 So the children of Israel inquired of the LORD (the ark of the covenant of God [was] there in those days, 20:28 and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, "Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?" And the LORD said, "Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand." 20:29 Then Israel set men in ambush all around Gibeah. 20:30 And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in battle array against Gibeah as at the other times. 20:31 So the children of Benjamin went out against the people, [and] were drawn away from the city. They began to strike down [and] kill some of the people, as at the other times, in the highways (one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah) and in the field, about thirty men of Israel. 20:32 And the children of Benjamin said, "They [are] defeated before us, as at first." But the children of Israel said, "Let us flee and draw them away from the city to the highways." 20:33 So all the men of Israel rose from their place and put themselves in battle array at Baal Tamar. Then Israel's men in ambush burst forth from their position in the plain of Geba. 20:34 And ten thousand select men from all Israel came against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce. But [the Benjamites] did not know that disaster [was] upon them. 20:35 The LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel. And the children of Israel destroyed that day twentyfive thousand one hundred Benjamites; all these drew the sword. 20:36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. The men of Israel had given ground to the Benjamites, because they relied on the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah. 20:37 And the men in ambush quickly rushed upon Gibeah; the men in ambush spread out and struck the whole city with the edge of the sword. 20:38 Now the appointed signal between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was that they would make a great cloud of smoke rise up from the city, 20:39 whereupon the men of Israel would turn in battle. Now Benjamin had begun to strike [and] kill about thirty of the men of Israel. For they said, "Surely they are defeated before us, as [in] the first battle." 20:40 But when the cloud began to rise from the city in a column of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and there was the whole city going up [in smoke] to heaven. 20:41 And when the men of Israel turned back, the men of Benjamin panicked, for they saw that disaster had come upon them. 20:42 Therefore they turned [their backs] before the men of Israel in the direction of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them, and whoever [came] out of the cities they destroyed in their midst. 20:43 They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them, [and] easily trampled them down as far as the front of Gibeah toward the east. 20:44 And eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell; all these [were] men of valor. 20:45 Then they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon; and they cut down five thousand of them on the highways. Then they pursued them relentlessly up to Gidom, and killed two thousand of them. 20:46 So all who fell of Benjamin that day were twentyfive thousand men who drew the sword; all these [were] men of valor. 20:47 But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and they stayed at the rock of Rimmon for four months. 20:48 And the men of Israel turned back against the children of Benjamin, and struck them down with the edge of the swordfrom [every] city, men and beasts, all who were found. They also set fire to all the cities they came to.
